Frank Blacow
Art Dealer, Artist, Valuer, Art Teacher and Restorer, Frank was born in England and joined the Merchant Navy at a young age. He settled in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1947. Frank became interested in art in the early 1960s and started off as a collector of early New Zealand art, especially watercolours. He became something of an authority on those works. One thing led to another, and soon he was buying and selling art and valuing art works. From that time on, art became his profession and career. Frank arrived in Brisbane in 1987 and continued his career in art, buying and selling works internationally.
One day in 1994, Frank suddenly decided he would like to paint. He stuck to drawing for about three months, then in desperation went and purchased some watercolours, (the most difficult of media), and started to paint. All the years of looking at works of art must have sunk in, and together with the drawing practice, allowed him to produce some reasonable works from the beginning.
For the last five years Frank has studied restoration of old works of art with the well-known Czech artist and restorer Pavel Foreman, older brother of Hollywood film director and screenwriter Milos Foreman. Frank paints in all media, with a love for watercolours and a passion for restoration. He is married with three children and five grandchildren. His wife Lindsay is a member of the Brisbane Concert Choir.
